Runner’s Guide to Rainy Weather

written by greg

Is the rain about to ruin your work out schedule?  Do not worry. Scientific research shows that jogging in the rain helps burn more calories. You also do not get tired faster hence allowing you to intensify your work out.

However joggers need to be cautious and well prepared when they go out jogging in the rain. Below we have a list of measures joggers should always put into consideration before going for a jog in the rain.  Here is some motivation for running in the rain.

1. Put on a hat.

When rain water hits your face it may become difficult for you to see, and a lot of time and energy will be wasted in wiping off water from your face. Hats especially those with brims ensure that rain does not hit your face allowing you to work out without any worries.

2. Put on clothes with water resistant fabrics.

Jogging in the rain increases the the chances of losing a lot of heat hence causing hypothermia. Wearing clothes made of water resistant fabrics such as polypropylene will ensure that less cold water gets into contact with your skin. This protects you from extreme loss of heat which may cause pneumonia.

3. Wear shoes with good sole.

When it rains the ground becomes more slippery. In such conditions you can easily fall and injure yourself or you may not run comfortably if your shoes are not good enough. The shoes should be water proof to prevent them from soaking a lot of water. Thinner socks are also advisable because they soak less water than thick once.

4. Put on bright clothes.

Visibility is low during rainy conditions, it is therefore extremely dangerous to run in the rain. Wearing bright clothes or clothes with neon ensures you are more visible to other road users keeping you more visible and safer.

5. Plan your route carefully.

Running in the rain poses a lot of challenges and risks. Before going for a jog in the rain you need to weigh your options and choose a rout that would favor the rainy conditions. Choose routs that are less slippery and those with less car traffic to ensure that you are safe

6. Avoid running in thunderstorms.

As much as it may be fun to run in the rain not all rainy conditions are good for running. Going out for a jog during thunder storms puts you at a risk of being struck by lightening. Further more visibility in such conditions are extremely poor and you may not be visible to other road users. Instead you can move your work outs indoors and stay safe.

7. Keep all your electronics in a plastic bag.

When you are going out for a jog in the rain it is better to leave your gadgets at home. Unless you have water resistant phone or gadgets, it is advisable to put all your gadgets into a plastic bag as you jog in the rain.

Change immediately after the work out. Staying with wet clothes for a long time after getting rained on increases our chances of getting hypothermia. After a jog in the rain it is advisable dry up, change into dry clothes and get something hot to eat or drink.

Common Running Injuries

written by Brendon

Running is one of the best ways to stay in shape, it does wonders for your cardiovascular health and burns an enormous amount of calories helping you to manage your weight.  Our bodies are built for running, and it can do incredible things like boost your immune system and manage your cholesterol.  But running is still a high impact activity that can cause injury.  Your feet, knees and spine are all impacted when you run and you can cause injury if you don’t run properly.  Here are some common running injuries and how you can avoid them.

Common Knee Problems

Runner’s knee or patellofemoral pain syndrome happens when you irritate the cartilage of your kneecap.  This alone makes up 45% of all running injuries, and it can happen to you if you’re not careful.  The pain in your knee increases the more you run and it is caused from having the wrong shoes.  If you’re shoes aren’t meant for running or you don’t have enough support you can find yourself in a great deal of pain.  Where you run also matters, uneven surfaces like trail running can increase your risk.  Always rest between runs too to avoid runner’s knee.  Here is some help in choosing the right shoes to avoid runner’s knee.

Common Foot Problems

Plantar fasciitis happens when the tissues that connects your heel bone to your toes becomes inflamed.  If you have tight Achilles tendon it puts you at a higher risk of getting plantar fasciitis.  Once again this is an injury you can avoid with the right running shoes.  It is more common in runners with flat feet or those who run long distances.  Not only will this put a halt to your running it will also make walking difficult.

Common Leg Problems

One of the most common problems in your legs from running is shin splints.  This gives you a sharp pain in your shins because your tibia becomes inflamed.  It happens not only to runners but it is pretty common among tennis players as well.  The pain can be constant or intermittent, but either way it will stop you in your tracks.  Uneven roads or poor footwear can leave you with shin splints.  Your stride can also cause this condition too.

These are the three most common injuries that come from running.  Getting the right pair of running shoes with adequate support can drastically reduce your chances of getting any of them.  Running is great for your mind and body, but not when it causes injury.

What is the Best Time of Day for Running

written by Brendon

Runners and other athletes always want to make the most out of their workouts and a common question that many trainers get asked is what is the best time of day for running?  Will early morning runs benefit you more than running after work or does it really matter?  Let’s get to the bottom of this mystery so that you can make the most out of your workout.

What type of exercise you’re doing matters

Aerobic exercises like running or cycling can be done pretty much anytime of the day with little or no problems.  If you’re the early bird then put on your running shoes and go catch that worm.  If you prefer to run in the evening to get rid of the stresses of the day, then by all means have at it.

If you are doing resistance training, perhaps in addition to your running that’s something else entirely.  Weight training affects your central nervous system far more than running does and first thing in the morning you may find yourself sluggish and not wanting to work out.  You may also find yourself not as strong as in the afternoon, that’s perfectly normal and it will vary with each individual.  You may just find that later in the day just works better for you.

Your lifestyle is a factor

What kind of work you do may also impact your running.  For example if your job requires lots of standing then you may find yourself too fatigued to go running in the evenings.  Mornings may be better suited to you even if you are not really much of a morning person.  Your body will adjust and you will still have a better run that after you have been standing all day.

Which do you prefer?

You may have to look to your body and figure out when you perform at your best.  Morning people will do great first thing in the morning while others would much rather have that extra hour of sleep.  Don’t get caught up in “what you should do” and listen more to what you feel better doing.  Results are what you want to rely on rather than some internet guru who has never met you.

As long as you manage to get in a run a couple of times per week, whether you do it in the evening or you are up at the crack of dawn shouldn’t matter in the least.
